Somatic Therapy | a body centered approach

About

While talk therapy can help you understand your experiences, somatic work invites you to explore how those experiences are held in your body and autonomic nervous system. You might notice persistent tension in your shoulders or jaw, shallow breathing, a tightness in your chest, restlessness, or a tendency to shut down or disconnect when feeling overwhelmed. These bodily cues can offer insight into how you respond to stress, relationships, and past experiences, including trauma.

Drawing from my Somatic Experiencing® training, I help you gently develop greater awareness of your internal experience, recognize patterns in your autonomic nervous system, and build a stronger sense of safety and connection within yourself. Through a collaborative, paced approach, we work with bodily sensations, emotions, and impulses to support physiological regulation, process difficult experiences, and expand your capacity to navigate life's challenges. Rather than trying to force change, somatic therapy creates space for you to listen to your body's signals, reconnect with yourself, and discover new ways of responding to the world around you.

What is Somatic Experiencing?

Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) is a body-based approach to healing trauma and chronic stress. Developed by Dr. Peter Levine, SE is based on the understanding that trauma is not just a psychological experience—it’s something that also lives in the nervous system and the body.

Rather than requiring you to retell or relive past events, SE focuses on tuning into the subtle physical sensations that arise in the present moment. These sensations often hold the key to where stress, fear, or overwhelm may be “stuck” in the body. By gently guiding your awareness to these sensations and allowing them to shift at your own pace, SE helps your nervous system complete unfinished survival responses—leading to greater resilience, regulation, and a renewed sense of safety in your body.

Somatic Experiencing can be especially helpful if traditional talk therapy has felt overwhelming, overly analytical, or hasn’t fully resolved deeper patterns. It’s a gentle yet powerful method that supports healing from the inside out.
